Installing MLDesigner

Get MLDesigner started

The installation procedure of MLDesigner is realized as graphical wizard and requires no special administrative knowlege. There are two ways to install MLDesigner onto your system. We recommend you log on as super user (root) and proceed with this privileges. The second option is to install MLDesigner as normal user.

Install MLDesigner with super user privileges

To install MLDesigner as a non-root user see the section "Install MLDesigner as normal user". To install MLDesigner we recommend you log on as root and proceed as follows.

  • NOTE: When you are logged in as normal user and you use the su command to become root, please used command ’su -’. Using su command without ’-’ might lead to installation problems.

1. Provide the installation media

MLDesigner is shipped as CD/DVD media, ISO-Image file or TAR archive. Do the appropriate task to access the media. Insert and mount the CD-ROM, mount the ISO-Image file or extract the archive.

  • NOTE: To mount an ISO-Image simply do:
    mount -o loop -t iso9660 MLDxxxxx.xxx-xxx.iso /path/to/mount/dir

2. Start the installation program

Change to the directory where you have mounted the CD-ROM/ISO-Image or where you have extracted the tar archive. Execute the installer program with the comman:

./setup

This will start the installation.

If the setup does not start please check occurring message(s) like:

Starting to probe software dependencies...
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key
ishield: cannot connect to X server :0.0

In this case you have to provide extended privileges to the super user "root". There are the following options:

  1. Use "kdesu COMMAND" if running KDE desktop
  2. Use "gksu COMMAND" if running Gnome desktop, or
  3. manually grant X server access to root utilizing xhost as normal user:
xhost +local:root
su <password>
COMMAND
  • NOTE: When installing MLDesigner on newer architectures (like SuSE 10.2) the message "Qt: Locales not supported on X Server" is displayed. This is only a warning message and it can be ignored.

3. Read the Software License Agreement

The installer program will present the Software License Agreement. Read it carefully and select Accept to continue the installation or Decline to exit (no data will be written on your system if you decline)

4. Configure your MLDesigner installation

The installer program will present the default installation directory and offer you the opportunity to specify an alternative directory. Click Browse to choose a directory if you want to install MLDesigner in a directory other than the default /usr/local/mld2. Other common choices could be /opt/mld2 or /usr/share/mld2.

  • NOTE: If you are not logged in as root, make sure you have write permission for the relevant directory.
  • NOTE: The contents of an existing directory will be deleted

If you are upgrading or reinstalling MLDesigner, the installer deletes all program files in the chosen directory when you click the OK button.

If you are upgrading or reinstalling MLDesigner your original license file is saved and restored in the new MLDesigner directory.

The program now checks all files on the media. Program files will now be copied. A status indicator will show the progress of the copying process. This could take some time depending on your system.

  • NOTE: To cancel or interrupt the installation press CTRL+C or close the shell. In this case the install program will leave unused files in the directory where you want the MLDesigner to be installed in, including any backup of the license file called license.dat in the /tmp directory.

After successfully copying all files, the information necessary to get a license file from MLDesign Technologies, Inc. is displayed. This information is saved in your MLDesigner installation directory (licenseinfo.txt) and must be sent to MLDesigner via our web interface.

The information required before a license can be issued are host name, host id and host sys (Operating System). Use the web interface at

www.mldesigner.com/support.php

to request a license (be sure to send us your workstation details).<br />If you are in possession of a new license file (usually called license.dat), press the install license button. If you have just upgraded MLDesigner to the latest version and the installer had made a backup of your old license file or if you have not yet received your license file, click the OK button.
