Ten Steps to Successful Discrete Event Simulation Modeling

This is a quick introduction to Discrete Event simulation modeling with MLDesigner. The objective is to provide a structured and systematic approach to modeling for those who are new to the field. It focuses on Discrete Event modeling with MLDesigner, but the step-by-step approach is generally applicable to all types of simulation modeling. The Ten Steps:

Bound the problem space

Step 1

Analyze your problem and define your problem space as tightly as possible.

State your problem as abstract as possible and do NOT incorporate assumptions into your problem statement.

The problem statement should be as comprehensive as possible and It should answer question like:

  • What is the purpose of the modeling project?
  • Is your problem related to an existing system or a system to be developed?
  • What is the temporal scope of your project (short-term analysis to life-of-system) ?
  • What is the level of the system (chip level or below, product level, site level, global)?
  • Is the system part of a larger system?
  • How should the system be used?
  • How much time is available to conduct the modeling project?
